Carsales Australia's open market

Buy an Australian car from Carsales

Carsales carries the deepest spread of stock in the country. Send your advisor a link and the full landed cost for Malaysia comes back itemised.

What Carsales is

Australia's car market, and where most of it happens.

A blue Ford Bronco photographed against a plain background

Dealer and private stock, listed at an asking price from the day it goes online.

Carsales began in Melbourne in 1997, moving printed classified advertising onto the internet, and the business around it is now listed on the Australian exchange. Franchised dealers, independents and private sellers all list on it, which is why it carries a spread no single group can match.

It is open to anyone, from anywhere. Prices are asking prices set by Australian sellers for Australian buyers, and the cars are right-hand drive without conversion. The only open question is what one of them costs to land in Malaysia, and that is the part we answer.

How buying here works

Three moves. The first two are yours if you want them, and you can hand over at any point.

  1. 01

    You find the car

Browse Carsales at your own pace, in English, at prices that do not move while you think. No account, and nothing to ask for.

  2. 02

    You price it yourself

Six fields off the listing into our calculator and the landed cost for Malaysia comes back itemised, duty included. Or skip it, and an advisor runs the same numbers for you.

  3. 03

We check it and buy it

Send the link. A PPSR check and the rego history first, then one of ours stands in front of the car, and only then a deposit.

If you want the number first

Six fields, and you have the number

Everything the calculator needs is already on the listing. Copy it across and the landed cost for Malaysia comes back in about 30 seconds, itemised, with the duty and our service fee already in it.

What you pay to start

20%

of the car price, to secure the car

Before we buy

A 20% deposit lets your advisor commit to the seller. Nothing is due while you are still browsing, and nothing is due to see a quotation.

If the inspection disappoints

The deposit is refundable if what our inspector finds does not match what the listing claimed. You walk away, and we go back to the shortlist.

Once the car is yours

The balance follows the shipping and clearance milestones, on a schedule your advisor confirms in writing.

We publish this so you can plan the cash flow. Payments go to Direct Car Import Sdn Bhd only, and your advisor confirms the account with you directly. We never post bank details on this website.

Price it yourself, or ask us

The calculator is public and it does the same arithmetic your advisor does. Six fields off a listing and the landed cost for Malaysia comes back itemised, in about 30 seconds.

None of it is compulsory. If the fields look like work, an advisor runs the same calculation on any car you send and comes back with the itemised total.

  1. 01

    Pick the country

It opens on Japan. Take the Australia tab and the shipping fees, the duty basis and the exchange rate all switch with it.

  2. 02

    Copy six fields

Maker, model and vehicle type, the price in Australian dollars, the registration month and year. Use the advertised price before government charges.

  3. 03

    Read every line

Leave Full Breakdown ticked and sign in with your phone number. The duty, the fees and our service fee come back as separate lines, not one number.

Questions about buying in Australia

Straight answers on the listing, the checks, condition and timing.

It is Australia's largest car marketplace, carrying dealer and private stock at fixed asking prices. It began in Melbourne in 1997 and the group around it is listed on the Australian exchange. The marketplace is not ours; we buy from it on your behalf.

Yes, and we would rather you did. Browsing is the easy half. The listing belongs to an Australian seller, the price stops at the forecourt, and the car still has to be checked, bought, shipped and cleared through Malaysian customs. That is the half we carry.

No, and no importer's is. You pay the landed cost, which adds shipping, clearance, duty and our service fee to the listing. Australian listings usually quote a price excluding government charges, and that is the figure to put in the calculator. Your advisor confirms the total in writing before you commit.

For cars that were never sold in Japan. Australia takes right-hand-drive American and European models that no other market gets, and it does not salt its roads, so bodies and undersides stay clean in a way British cars often do not.

A PPSR check shows outstanding finance, theft and write-off history, and the state register adds the odometer trail. Then one of ours inspects the car in person at the seller's premises before any money moves.

Yes. The import calculator is public, and a Carsales listing gives you everything it asks for. Take the Australia tab first, because the fees and the exchange rate switch with it. Seeing the itemised breakdown needs a phone number and a verification code, which takes a minute and does not involve an advisor.

A deposit of 20% of the car price, once you have seen the itemised quotation and asked us to proceed. It is refundable if the inspection does not match what the listing claimed. The balance follows the shipping and clearance milestones.

That depends on sailing schedules and clearance, so your advisor confirms the expected window in writing before you commit. The run covers collection in Australia, RoRo shipping from the nearest port to Port Klang, customs clearance, duty assessment, Puspakom and registration.

Send us a listing

Your advisor returns the full landed cost, usually the same day.

No cost to look, and no deposit until you have seen the quotation.
